Beware Of The Leaven
When I was much younger, my parents use to warn me against keeping certain friends because they were not good friends. This is a call to caution, a call to pay attention to life. Also, at the gate of most compounds with dogs, there is always an inscription, “beware of dogs”. This is an indication that there are dogs and a warning to be careful on entering the compound. The dogs can bite or injure. One is to be careful and guard against these dogs. Today Jesus advised his disciples to watch out, to guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod. What is this leaven Jesus is talking about? It is the evil words, the evil intentions and the errors they sprayed. This gives us a serious concern to think, to listen and to look deeper into ourselves, and our relationship with others in our society. One needs to ask, do l do this sometimes? Do l say things that mislead others? Do l mislead others by my non-verbal negative attitudes? Am l a negative person
sometimes? It is a warning of love to help us see and understand the reality. Everyone who bakes know the effect of leaven (yeast) in a dough. It affects and makes the dough rise. Our contact with others can bring positive or negative changes. For Jesus to warn his disciples against the leavens of these people shows that they were not good in mind and character. Their intentions were not good. Our bad and wicked lives can destroy our society. Our life of hatred, jealousy, selfishness, cheating, lack of concern for the other could be very disastrous. Our good lives can promote love, peace and understanding. Our togetherness can encourage development and progress. Our lives affect one another positively or negatively. Therefore, Jesus is saying that we are to beware of ourselves, our life’s attitudes, and guard against dangers that follow them. May we be an encouragement to others in Jesus name, Amen. “YOU ARE THE LIGHT”
